IMPORTANT FAQs

Q: I don't have a website, can I still join?
A: No, people do not join WebRings, only websites

Q: What makes a WebRing work?
A: The coding is most important. It must be up-to-date and it must be in an accessible location, both for Ring visitors and those who never heard of WebRings. Each site needs to bring traffic to share with the other members.

Q: I'm new to WebRings and am overwhelmed, is there an easy place to start?
A: Join My 1st WebRing first!

Q: How long until I know if I'm approved?
A: Expect at least a full week in any Ring because I want to see if you show tendencies of being a Ring collector. Larger/busier Rings can take up to 4 weeks because of the backlog plus my imposed waiting period.

Q: Should I contact you if my site isn't reviewed in a week or two?
A: No, I'm aware of your submission and will make a more objective decision if I'm not being pestered or pressured.

Q: Must I install that bar thing on my site?
A: Only if you want your site to be in the Ring

Q: What if I don't want to put the code on the main page of my site?
A: Create a separate page, link to it from all other pages, and include "WebRings" in the hyperlink

Q: May I put the code on a links page?
A: No, WebRings are not links.

Q: May I put the code on an entry page?
A: Only if there is a link BACK to it from the other content pages using the word "WebRings" in the hyperlink

Q: May I change the size or color of the NavBar?
A: Absolutely not. Uniformity is one of the keys to success. If you don't like the look of my NavBar, please do not apply to join.

Q: What do you mean by "ring collecting"?
A: Some members want to join as many Rings as possible, sometimes with no regard to whether their site even BELONGS in every Ring, just to get as many NavBars on a stack as possible

Q: Doesn't more memberships mean more traffic?
A: Almost never. Only memberships in QUALITY Rings will result in traffic for your site. Less can be more and bigger is usually not better.

Q: How many is too many?
A: While each submission is judged individually, if there are more than 75 NavBars on the URL you plan to submit, you might as well not even try to join any of mine. But I've been known to decline applications with lower numbers if the existing Rings are junk.

Q: Why is it important to have visible navigation?
A: For everyone to receive traffic, all sites are responsible for delivering traffic (it's called sharing). If your code is not accessible to all visitors, you are failing at your membership responsibilities.

Q: Why are you so picky about where the code goes?
A: Quality. I want all members to get as much traffic as possible and visitors to have an easy time reaching every site.

Q: May I put the Ring code on every page of my site?
A: That would be wonderful!

Q: Where do I put the code on my framed site?
A: Use the main frame of your frameset. The checker will find it.

Q: What do I do when the site FAILs the checker but I have the code on the right page?
A: If the FAIL status is false, talk to me and I'll override the checker.

Q: May I submit more than one URL?
A: Only if they do not link to one another in any way.

Q: Won't my site lose visitors by being in a Ring?
A: In a quality Ring, your traffic will increase, as it is being shared by the other sites. If your site is good, the visitors will bookmark it (or the entire Ring).

Q: Where can I turn for answers to questions?
A: The WebRing Users' Guide is very handy!
