I realize this page says it's a Q & A for MY rings; however, the responses below will likely answer most questions you have about any ring membership. If not, contact the manager of that ring directly. Likewise, if your question about your membership in MY ring is not answered below, contact me as instructed on the Ring Homepage. - How Soon Must I Install the Code?
-
Ideally, you should install it immediately; however, your site will not be DENIED membership (to any of my Rings) for failure to install the code right away. Your site is judged based upon it's relevancy to the ring and compliance with the rules of the ring. If the coding isn't installed properly, your approved site will not be active.
- What is This Navigation Code I'm Being Told About?
-
The code creates the ring navigation bar which allows visitors to move from site to site with ease and attracts new members.
- Must I Really Install This Navigation Code?
-
Only if you want to be ACTIVE (part of the list, able to receive traffic) in a ring.
- I Cannot Use JavaScript, Are There Other Code Options?
-
YES! There is individual HTML for this ring and a link-to workaround. See Coding Options for descriptions and instructions.
- Why Does My Code Look Like Coding, but not a NavBar?
-
If the problem isn't your inability to use JavaScript (as noted in the previous question) then perhaps your site editing software has other requirements for the proper display of JavaScript. See if the examples in the SSNB & Site Editors page yields any clues.
- Where Do I Place This Code?
-
Open the file which corresponds to the URL you registered. Place the code somewhere within that file. The exact location (top or bottom) is up to you , the exact method (the way you must do it) depends upon the protocols of the site editor you use. Check your Help Files if you are uncertain HOW to install the code. If you use FRAMES, then open the file which corresponds to the main page within the frameset. Do not place it in the file which contains the frameset!
- May I Place the Coding on a Links Page?
- You can, so long as that is the page you registered. However, you should then also ensure that the link to that page reads "links/WebRings". Keep in mind that a "links" page is not the ideal location for WebRing navbars as WebRings are not links. Links are arbitrary sites you promote on your own without any promise of a reciprocal link. WebRings are a system of navigation between sites on a similar topic through use of the navigation code. If the coding is difficult to find, navigation will cease and the visitor will leave. This is of no benefit to the Ring and its members.
- My site PASSes, is that good enough?
- Not necessarily. Look at your site a little closer. First, can you see the navigation coding on your site? Proper installation means being able to see and use the navigation. If you don't see it or it looks like code, see the earlier question concerning improperly displayed coding.
Next thing to check is whether you, I, or anyone else can find those WebRings easily from other pages on your site. If you registered the "main" page of your site and installed the WebRings there, you likely have a link called "home" on most pages. This is sufficient. If you registered any other "entry" page (such as a splash page with your site's logo/title or a WebRing-only page), there must be a clearly-marked path BACK to it from within your site. Remember, not only must WebRing visitors be able to get back to the WebRing, but also all traffic on your site should be able to find the page. After all, most new WebRing visitors and members learn about WebRings through member sites such as yours.
- I'm Not Following Any of This Code Jargon, Can You Make It Easier?
- If you haven't yet been introduced to WebRing's tutorial WebRing for new Users, may I please direct your attention to it now. Join My First WebRing and see how simple it all really is.
- The Test Reads PASS-L, Is This OK?
- For some sites, it is the only test result you can achieve. While a full "PASS" is most desirable, an easily-accessible PASS-L will be permitted to remain active. If you are confused, you can read up on the differences between PASS and PASS-L.
- Why Was My Site Suspended?
- The email you SHOULD have received was supposed to have explained it. Most suspensions are commonly due to FAILing the checker, which is a result of having the ring code in the wrong location, having an error in the code, or having no code installed at all. However, as the previous question states, PASSing is not always sufficient. PASSing sites can be suspended, too.
- How Can I Get My Suspended Site Active Again??
- Install the code properly and PASS the checker test. Use the Navigation Wizard in your site management options to assist you! The system will immediately activate a suspended site which PASSes the checker.
- My site PASSes, why is it still suspended?
- Most likely because it was manually suspended by the RingMaster. Whenever you have a suspension you cannot resolve on your own, you need to contact the RingMaster for guidance. Do not ask WebRing Support to help activate your site. Ironically enough, they'll likely refer you to my website for assistance in addition to suggesting you contact the RingMaster.
- Why Is My Site FAILing the Checker?
- First, make sure you have run the checker and are not viewing older results. If it still FAILs, try to determine the reason for FAILure. If you cannot come up with anything, contact the RingMaster for guidance. Do not ask WebRing Support to help activate your site. Ironically enough, they'll likely refer you to my website for assistance in addition to suggesting you contact the RingMaster.
- I Don't Have a Website, Can I Still Join?
- Sorry, but WebRings are for websites, not people. The only benefit of membership is to have your site promoted. Also note that the website you submit must be your own, one you can edit for the purpose of installing navigation code. There is no benefit to submitting a site you do not own.
- Do I Need a WebRing ID to Visit Member Sites?
-
You need not have a WebRing account to browse member sites, unless you are looking to access adult content, which you won't find in my rings.
- Why Does the Bar Not Show All the Links Yet?
- Your site is most likely pending, and you should see that word right behind the ring title. I just haven't visited your site yet, but I'll be there very soon! If you see "suspended" that's another issue. Scroll up to the question on suspended sites.
- Why Does the Bar Show Only One Ring with a Link to the Others?
- This is part of the Single NavBar Display and is displaying correctly.
- Can I Join More Than One WebRing?
- Yes! Not only yes you can, but yes you should. Now, I'm not advocating joining hundreds of WebRings. First, your stack will be too cluttered and repulsive to visitors (and some RingMasters). Secondly, the idea behind WebRings is traffic. Keep your membership limited to a dozen or so quality memberships. Select the Rings carefully based upon overall traffic and hits to the member sites.
- Can I Submit Another Page of My Site to a Different WebRing?
- Certainly! When joining a WebRing you have the option of selecting a previously-registered URL or entering a new one. Remember, when you submit a new URL, you have to install additional coding on that page.
- What's with the Red, Yellow, and Green Images on the Hub Page?
- The PASS/FAIL icons are WebRing's way of showing visitors what sites display the code properly. Sometimes there are mistakes, which are correctable by reading the linked information.
