This pair is described on the same page because they work together in many aspects. The Navigation Rating and Pass/Fail Icons are both located on the hub page and show just how navigable a ring can be expected to be. The navigation rating is a complex calculation which ultimately reveals the ratio of sites which PASS the checker to those which do not, by using a numeric value from 0 to 100. PASSing sites are weighted heaviest, FAILing sites weigh least, with PASS-L falling in the middle. Anything over 90 is considered a well-managed ring, and anything under 70 is poor, with the remainder being acceptable but not ideal. Well-managed is defined by the WebRing standard of requiring the installation of the NavBar code on the registered URL. While the NavBar display location is ultimately the choice of the manager, the basic rule remains that it should be visible on the first page the visitor reaches. WebRing has no plans to require this rule be enforced, but has a responsibility to visitors and potential members to show them the level of compliance.Neither the navigation rating nor PASS/FAIL icons can be removed from the hub page. The icons can be changed (they are thumbs by default) by the manager in the 'color scheme' section of ring management. They can be improved by enabling automated management or manual suspension of sites which do not comply with the rules of NavBar code placement. Icons and Ratings were instituted to show visitors how easily they should be able to get around the ring in its entirety and potentional members how easily their site may be reached by visitors attempting to navigate the ring in its entirety. It's a fact that rings with easy-to-find NavBars have higher traffic as it's simple to navigate from one site to the next. What may seem simple to experienced users (such as managers) is not simple to people who are new to WebRings. Thus the rule of code placement exists to ensure more traffic for each member of every ring, which benefits everyone and is the primary goal behind the creation of WebRing.
