WebRingMail & Email Verification

WebRingMail is a WebRing-based means of sending and receiving WebRing-related email messages, generally from members to managers and vice versa. It allows you to organize and store messages sent to you saving space in your inbox for personal clutter. Even better, it can completely protect your privacy. Your email address no longer has to be made available to anyone. How, or even IF, you use WebRingMail depends upon your configurations, which are discussed below along with information about using WebRingMail.

Configuration

We begin with the settings page, http://*.webring.com/cgi-bin/info?screen=infowrmail, which can be reached from any of the account screens, such as My Rings. Check the left column for Edit my WebRing Mail settings.

  • External Email
This is equivalent to what is included in your Account info and if you change either, the other will also change, triggering a confirmation code to be emailed from the system. Even if you use WebRingMail, critical correspondences may be sent to this email account by WebRing Staff. Critical email means correspondences to and from support, the welcome email, notifications of unread mail, and email verification codes.
  • Show body in management
By checking this box, you are asking to have the full body of each message on the screen to display. Leaving it unchecked will list each email by title, with the first few words of the email showing (like in the Forums), and a link to open it.
  • # of messages/screen
You can select any number of emails up to 50 to display on one page. All others will wrap onto subsequent pages.
  • Notification Preference
This is where you establish how or if you use WebRingMail.
    1. Notify daily
This will send a generic message to your inbox once a day if you have any unread messages.
    2. Notify immediately
This will send the same generic message to your inbox each time you have a new unread message.
    3. Forward all emails
If you do not have your email address verified, this option will be darkened. This is for those with verified email addresses who prefer to have all email continue coming to a personal email address. Remember that if you change the registered email address, WRM will cease forwarding until the new address is verified. You will also have to re-configure this setting.
    4. Never notify me, I'll read my mail here
If you do not have your email address verified, this option will be darkened. This suggests that you will maintain your responsibility to check regularly for email. You still will be notified daily by a generic message if your email remains unread for 24 hours. But by checking in just before logging out for the day, you can avoid most of these reminders.
  • Who can contact me
This will restrict contact to members only if checked and will suppress your email address from your profile page. If you change your account info page to show your email address, you can then receive WRM from anyone, as well.
  • Contact Msg
Got something to communicate with people before the email you? Say it here. This is especially useful for RingMasters who want to remind members that it's more useful to use the "Contact" link in site management than to send a generic email that may be lacking most vital identification information.
  • Save Folders
This allows you to create (or disable) up to six different folders for sorting and saving WRM messages. Please scroll into the next section to learn more about how the creation and deletion of folders will affect your mail.

Utilization

To use WebRingMail, you go to http://*.webring.com/wrmail?read, which is also linked from the left column of My Rings. Look for the link called "Process WebRing Mail". If you have unprocessed mail, there will also be a notation on the hub of any Ring you visit.

By default, you will arrive in the "unprocessed" folder, which is where all new mail is collected. You then have the option to delete the messages or move them to one of the folders you created. Simply check the box beside the message(s) you wish to move, then select a folder from the drop-down menu on the left side of the horizontal bar at the top or bottom of the page (you'll see there is a second drop-down menu on the right, which will be explained in a moment) then select "move".

To delete a message, simply check the box, then click delete (you can also select the "trash" folder followed by the move button, but the delete button is quicker.) Trash folders are periodically emptied by the system. All other folders have an infinite hold.

Emails to which you can reply will have a reply link. System emails (BCCs to managers) will not have this reply option. Emails from members will contain a link to their profile, as well. If the message was sent from a member to the RingMaster via the "contact RingMaster" link, it will contain the identifying information about the Ring and member. Messages sent by members via the WebRingMail link in the manager's profile will have no identifying information unless the member thinks to include it.

To move between created folders, select the folder you wish to view from the drop-down menu on the right side of the horizontal bar at the top or bottom of the page, then click "go". You'll then be able to view all items in that folder. If you return to the settings page and REMOVE a folder, the messages in it will become inaccessible until you create the folder again. It doesn't matter what name you give that folder, the system remembers them as folders 1 through 6 but presents the names you selected. Thus if you remove a name, save the changes, return later and insert a different title, the messages that were in that folder before it was removed will be visible again. To remove a folder and its contents, you must first delete the messages, then erase the folder's name. This also means you can rename a folder at any time without the risk of losing the contents of the folder.

Verification

Email verification seems to be stumping people for no understandable reason. There are two steps
  1. Having the verification email sent
  2. Entering the verification code in your account
One of the biggest problems with the verification process comes from either not having an email account that will receive WebRing System Email Some geniuses who forgot they willingly registered with WR reported legitimate system messages as spam. Thus some services have wrongly blacklisted WebRing email. If you do not receive the verification email, first ensure that the email address registered is legitimate and doesn't contain any misspells. After that, consider either registering a different address that may not be blacklisted. Or just use WebRing-based Email. The other problem is a result of people not entering the verification code correctly. Instead of using copy/paste, which does not appear to be acceptable in many browsers, manually type the number you are given.
Only after you have a verified email address can you opt to have WebRingMail forwarded to that validated email address. Keep in mind that having a verified email address will not guarantee that Rings you manage won't be adopted out. If your email address suddenly stops working or you abandon your management duties, the Ring can be adopted out if it is found to be neglected.
