Today I helped Chance over the bridge....though he was strong in spirit...his body was not. He was
suffering from DCM and I could no longer bear to see him in such a weakened state.
Rest softly my love...you are with your friends
now and I will see you again someday....I love you Chancey Pants!
This handsome boy was born January 2, 1997.
Chance was to be our introduction to the show world. Soon
after we brought Chance home, we became members of the Great
Dane Club of Central PA
(GDCCP)
to learn more about the breed standard as well as the
ins and outs of the show world.
You can't imagine how disappointing it was to learn at
his first vet visit that he
had a retained testicle. We were told that if it wasn't down by now
(8 weeks) it more than likely wouldn't come down.
So I showed him in match shows and for a time I was
able to get by while I blamed it on puppyhood. Our
first match he took BOB and Puppy Group 3 at the Berks
County Kennel Club Match.
He was the youngest in the group out of 10 puppies.
At Specialty matches he brought home 1st or 2nd place
ribbons.
But, at 6 months we retired him. Chance was
neutered when he was 3 years old and shortly thereafter we acquired Axle from the same breeder. His replacement per our contract.
Name Game: His registered name is
pretty much self-explanatory we think. We were "newbies"
and knew we were "taking a chance".
Chance was a true 37 inche male and
weighed about 165 pounds. We experienced our first
case of bloat with
him in the Summer of 2000. Complete torsion and had to have spleen removed. We had him tacked in 4 places.
I am so glad I took the time
to educate myself on the health risks associated
with this breed
and I was able to recognize his symptoms almost immediately.
It was very touch and go for about a week. But he pulled through it and was ten times the lover he was before! He bloated again in 2003
but our vet was able to tube him. I took him home to monitor and would gently massage him throughout the night to release excess gas.
He would have what I called "mini-bloats" where his belly would be very bloated so I'd give him phazyme and massage him and within
an hour he'd be ok.
You can see a few pictures of him and a 3 generation
pedigree is also listed below.
NOTE: I DO NOT recommend/endorse
purchasing a puppy from Stormdancer Danes! It is ultimately
your decision as to who you
purchase your pet from but PLEASE do PLENTY of research and
ask questions and ask for references from other puppy people.
Check with the local breed club, breed rescue organization,
and/or local animal control
and ask for their opinion on a breeder(s). Just because you
may find a "deal" on the
purchase price of a dane, be forewarned that you could
end up paying a lot more both financially and emotionally.
NEVER leave without a signed contract, a bill of sale,
vet records,
health certificate from the breeders vet, and most
importantly, the AKC registration papers. PLEASE
if you are looking for a Great Dane
contact me
and I will refer you to a reputable breeder. One who is
truly committed to the breed and one
who breeds for the betterment of the breed and has the
breeds health, welfare, and temperament as their top
priority.
As I mention on Axle's page, I have
provided more than enough information
about this breed as well as a ton of informative
sites in my links section. I have a
questionnaire you should have potential
breeders fill out, how to interview a breeder, how to
identify a healthy puppy, etc. You are also more than
welcome
to contact us as we do offer breeder referrals.
Noone should have to go through what my family
has gone through to enjoy the companionship and
love from one of
the true gentle giants. Take the extra time
and spend the extra money
for a sound dane in both body and spirit. You will
not be disappointed that you did. *smile*
