When we purchased Storm, we knew we wanted a BIG DOG, and we knew danes were big and nothing more. We answered an ad in the paper for a blue male for $150. (I know) So we went to see him. And he took our breath away! He was already a year and half old when we got him. The owner told us her daughter couldn't stand his slobbering and she had 4 other dogs in the house of various sizes and that he was crated most of the day and she felt it was not fair too him. She also said he was destructive and ran away from previous homes. (Ours was his fifth and final home.)
We got his papers and took him home. We had a small car then, a Mercury Capri and he filled the entire back seat! We laughed the whole way home.
Since she said he was destructive, we bought a gate to keep him restricted to the
kitchen area when we were not at home. That didn't work, he jumped the gate
effortlessly! So we thought we would miss out on some sleep and see how he
did. First night he was fine. Slept on the loveseat. So figured I better cover the
loveseat. Next day, however, he must've gotten bored waiting for us to get up, so he
started chewing a hole
in the arm of the loveseat where his head was. We got up just in time or we wouldn't
have a loveseat left! We went to Pet Smart to get him some bones and never had a
problem after that. He was a really good dog. He loved it when Shane (our first son, then 2)
would lay on him to drink his bottles. He loved it when they ran their matchbox cars
all over his big blue body. FREE PETTING TIME! If they would stop, he would nudge
them to start again.
Always welcomed every child and animal we brought into our home. Was especially gentle when we brought Cheyenne home. She was as big as his head!
Storm was about 6 years old when we had him neutered. We were
getting Chance and thought it best to not have too much testosterone
in the house. He came through it fine. Over the years he gained some
weight and his rear was starting to give out on him but he always made the
effort to get his head under your hand for a pat.
Storm was almost 12 years old when we helped him cross over. He had become sick with pneumonia and we wanted to try
to save him but the vet informed us that he had a very enlarged heart probably caused from a viral infection. We decided to help
it best to help him over. Storm is our reason for never being without another Dane.
He was true to their description. The "gentle giant".
Storm, your body may be gone, but your spirit will always be with us. We miss you fat boy! Please
watch over us.
