RED STAR ARMY

The People's Free Socialist Union of Democratic Republics.

(And Workers' Paradise.)

Overview:

The Red Star Army was a firm believer in brute strength and raw destructive force. Their mechs were either medium or large in size and carried a mix of weapons - with a fondness for plasma and laser systems. Munitions were often designed with AP warheads, and secondary weapons set to HE to deal with enemy support units and peasant revolts. Red Star Army units were trained to keep close together in a steady advance with overlapping fields of fire to minimize the threat of faster, more agile opponents. Jump jets and flight systems were rare, and though select elite units did possess them, enhanced engines were the usual solution for the need of additional speed.

The Stalker frame was the oldest and most widely used mech design of the Red Star Army. Many of them had been modified to fit unexpected roles if a more suitable mech was unavailable or unlikely to be assigned to a particular unit. Its robust chassis took most field modifications with little complaint, but this tended made maintenance more of an art than a science. The most common variants are listed above.

5 Skirmisher 2x Plasma Gun [L+R]
2x Chain Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]
6 Brawler 2x Plasma Gun [L+R]

Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]
Enhanced Engine
7 Pugilist 2x Plasma Gun [L+R]
2x Rail Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]

The Skirmisher series was intended as an "officer" or "commando" mech, but saw most of its successes in urban defense, clearing enemy fortified complexes and in the role of a spotter.

Based on the Skirmisher frame. Hunter missions were usually raids that involved smashing or grabbing the objective, though the 71st Special Unit served with honor in the defense of the city of Peilevi and eventually broke the Siege of 100 Days. Not unlike the Stalker mechs, some were modified, though only decorated pilots would be permitted to do so.

7 Hammerer 2x Laser Cannon [L+R]
2x Chain Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]
9 Mauler 2x Particle Accelerator [L+R]
2x Chain Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]
11 Bludgeoner 2x Particle Accelerator [L+R]
2x Rail Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]

The Hammerer series was introduced to replace the Skirmisher series, but were not deployed in large enough numbers to permit withdrawal of the older mechs.

The Crossbow frame was meant to deliver withering missile barrages from its double launchers in each arm in a supporting role, but all too often found itself in the middle of a firefight with its primary weapons exhausted. Pilots of these mechs spent a lot of time practicing their kicking attacks.

5 Cluverin 2x Rail Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]
7 Stormgiant 2x Rail Cannon (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]
9 Thunderlord 2x Siege Gun (AP) [L+R]
Missile Launcher Small (HE) [F]

The Culverin frame was emblematic of Red Star Army - large and noisy, with a simple design to inflict devastating hits without grace or beauty. It was very popular with unit commanders. As a result, its sizable numbers in service were only surpassed by the Stalker series.
