Married: Thomas Perrian Cardwell, Sr. April 18, 1852 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Son of John Cardwell and Arminta W Watkins. He was born July 12, 1829 in Whitley Co, KY and died December 27, 1915 Breathitt Co, KY
Thomas Cardwell was shot & killed on the corner of main and court street in Jackson, KY. Thomas Perrin Cardwell married and remained in Breathitt County. His wife, Ellen South, daughter of Jeremiah Weldon South, bore nine children, six of these children were involved in the Hargis/Callahan/Marcum/Cockrell feud. At his father's death, T. P. bought his father's farm on Panbowl and raised his family there. T. P also served as Postmaster of Jackson from December of 1857 until March of 1866. He served Breathitt County in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1864-1865 and in the Kentucky State Senate from 1865-1869. T. P Cardwell was a well known enemy of the Hargis family. Of T. P's four sons, all four of them were either killed or wounded during the Breathitt County feuds, and Dr. D. B. Cox, T. P.'s son-in-law was also allegedly killed by the Hargis family.
OBIT: Ellen South Cardwell was the daughter of Jeremiah Weldon and Mary
Magdelene (Cockrell) South. she was born on April 13, 1832 near Haddix and was
raised in one of the wealthiest families in Breathitt County. She married
Thomas Perrin Cardwell on April 8, 1852 in Jeremiah Weldon South's parlor in
Jackson. He was born on July 12, 1829 in Williamsburg, Whitley County,
Kentucky.
Together they produced nine children:
Ellen passed to her rest on September 2, 1914 at her home in Jackson. She was
preceded in death by four children and three son-in-laws. Her husband, T. P.
Cardwell died on December 27, 1915 and never removed the black mourning armband
from his coat in honor of his wife.
They both rest in the Marcum Heights Cemetery overlooking the city of Jackson.
