Records of Jabez Fitch

Jabez Fitch, Jr. was born 15 February 1737 in New London County, CT and died 29 February 1812 in Hyde Park, VT. Jabez Fitch maintained a diary for his entire adult life which is being transcribed and published serially in the Mayflower Descendent. Most of the diary is in the possession of the Massachusetts Mayflower Society. Portions are scattered in the Library of Congress, the New York City Library, and the Bailey Howe Library at the University of Vermont. The location of the portion of the diary written when Jabez Fitch was at the battle of Long Island is unknown. This portion could have been seized by the British and transported to England. The New York City Library has the portion written while Jabez Fitch was on a prison ship in New York harbor.

The diary contains almost daily entries of Jabez experiences. Jabez Fitch was involved in both the French and Indian War and the Revolution. For those searching for genealogical information, Jabez often mentions births, marriages, and deaths.

Jabez Fitch was a Justice of the Peace from 1781 to 1789 in Norwich, CT. His record book is being transcribed and the first portion is available here. This is an html page converted from MS Word with no preparation for convenient on line navigation. If there is sufficient interest, indexing and/or searching capability will be added. The transcribers can be contacted at gadoisg@dejazzd.com

These records are being incorporated with the diary publication in the Mayflower Descendent. Jabez frequently comments in his diary on the cases recorded in his Justice of the Peace journal.
