My grandfather Jacob H. Unruh immigrated to this country in 1874 when he was about 8 years old. The Unruh's were German/Russian Mennonites and immigrated from Pordenau, Molotschna in South Russia. My great grandfather was Heinrich Unruh arriving in the United States in August of 1874 in New York on the ship Cimbria, they first settled in the area around Freeman, South Dakota. Jacob Unruh married Anna Teske who was my grandmother, Anna Teske's father was Christian Teske, her mother was Elizabeth Schmidt.

My father was Peter Unruh, he was born in Corn, Oklahoma in 1908. From Oklahoma the Unruh's moved to Canada, then to Alabama before arriving in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My father was a farmer, he passed away in March of 2001 at the age of 93. My mother was Adalina Elizabeth Lehman, she was born in Berne, Indiana in 1910, she died in 1982. Her father was Noah Menno Lehman and her mother was Meta Liechty. The Lehman's were Swiss Mennonites and arrived in the U.S. in 1840 arriving on the ship Concordia, they first settled in Wayne Co., Ohio before moving to Berne, Indiana.

The Unruh's were German\Russian Mennonites, so many German hymns were part of their life in the early years, one of my Dad's favorites was the German hymn "Gott ist die Liebe". I came across this sound file, I don't remember which choir performed this version.

There are several great sites for German\Russian Mennonite history, there was also a book written by Abe J. Unruh entitled "The Helpless Poles" (Courier Printing Company) written around 1974, the book is out of print, I found a copy by looking on the web.
