Boyertown Community Involvement in

Martin Luther King Day Volunteer Service Projects

Boyertown, PA ---The Boyertown Area Unity Coalition, working with students and community members, is involved in various service projects in Boyertown on Monday, January 20th, 2003, to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  In 1994, the Martin Luther King Day of Service was instituted to mobilize people of all ages in active volunteer service annually on Dr. King’s birthday.

This year, secondary students from the area will be working in con-junction with the Unity Coalition at the Boyertown Senior Center on a thorough cleaning of the facility.  Then, the volunteers will help put up posters at the Senior Center honoring Dr. King’s life, work, and ideals. These posters were created by Boyertown elementary students, the Boyertown Dream Team 2003, and will later be on display in the entire Boyertown area for Black History Month.

In addition, the J.K. Boyer Boyertown Community Library and the Unity Coalition are co-sponsoring an all-day reading marathon on Martin Luther King Day, January 20th.  Community volunteers will be reading to children at the library from 10 AM until 6:30 PM.

The Boyertown Area Unity Coalition believes this is an excellent way to support community building, particularly with the involvement of students. Our mission is to “create and nurture a caring community climate in which respect for all persons, young and old, is cultivated, and in which bigotry is rejected.”  For more information, contact the Boyertown Area Unity Coalition at 610-845-8999.
